TOES!
While in church, sometimes my oldest son, who was 1 at the time, would take off his socks/shoes and say out loud “TOES” I mention this because it was the first thing I thought of when I painted Gracie’s toes for the first time. Cute chubby little TOES painted without the guilt of harsh, toxic and smelly chemicals. I really didn’t think I would be able to paint her toes for a few years for that exact reason so imagine my excitement when I was to review a non-toxic, odorless and kid friendly Piggy Paint! The name alone makes you smile, doesn’t it? Piggy Paint-Natural as mud. BONUS-Piggy Paint uses 100% reused peanuts from their local community to ship their products! Reduce, reuse, recycle! A way to pamper Mother Earth! Perfect~
I thought it would be extremely difficult to paint a squirmy 9 month old’s tiny toes but surprisingly it wasn’t. Piggy Paint polish goes on much easier than other polishes. Not as thick and didn't take near as long to dry. Being water based seems to do the trick because it want very easy and for us it dried quickly too. The bottles are the size of a “normal” bottle of nail polish but comes with a skinny brush that is perfect for smaller nails. You how you were told to add acetone to nail polish to thin it? Even though Piggy Paint has a shelf life of several years, there may be a slight tendency for the polish to thicken as the months go by. This is easily corrected by adding a drop or two of WATER to the bottle and give it a good shake! Not acetone like the toxic formulas.
The following process only took me about two minutes to completely paint both sets of toenails on each of us.
- Washed our toes with soap and water
- Apply a thin coat of Primecoat
- Apply a thin coat of Piggy Paint-use blow dryer on nails for 30 seconds-REPEAT
- Apply a thin coat of topcoat-use blow dryer on nails for 30 seconds
- I used a q-tip dipped int the remover to take care of any tiny mistakes that I made. Even though Gracie moved less than I thought she would still wanted to play with everything :)
It has been 4 weeks with no chips on my toes. Gracie did get a couple chips on her big toes but only because I put her in a walker last week and she drug her feet. So much for the color Forever Fancy but now on to another color-Dragon Tears! Yes, they have some cute names as well which to me is a bonus. I may not be a little girl anymore, but I still like the fun names. Gracie obviously thinks they are pretty too because she smacks her lips as if she is going to be getting something tasty to eat. NOTE-Piggy Paint is not edible ;) I definitely recommend using the topcoat and primecoat set for added shine, scratch and chip resistance.
To remove-Use Piggy Paint Polish Remover. Piggy Paint Nail Polish Remover is specially formulated for Piggy Paint polish, though it will remove solvent-based polishes as well. Soak nails for approximately 30 seconds with a cotton ball saturated with Piggy Paint Nail Polish Remover. What I liked was that it had no odor at all and did not leave any type of residue on our toes. Which my the way, Piggy Paint Nail Polish Remover was nothing like removing polish with any off brand of Cutex that I was used to. After finishing I would always throw the cotton balls in the bathroom trash can but the odor was so strong that it would last a couple days-sometimes so much so I would have to then empty it in the trash can that stayed outside.

How Piggy Paint came to be-
Melanie Hurley-founder of Piggy Paint™. I am a stay-at-home mom with two very fancy little girls, ages 4 and 6, who love to have their fingernails painted. I’ve always hated the thought of my kiddos putting their hands in their mouths after I painted their nails with traditional kid polishes. Not only did the ingestion of the chemicals worry me, but the smell nearly left me light-headed after painting two sets of fingernails and toenails. One day while we were painting nails over a foam plate, my daughter dropped a glob of her solvent-based polish onto the plate. Shortly after, the paint began to bubble and “ate” through the plate. I looked in dismay at the hole in the plate and decided to test all of her other “kid” polishes on the foam. Within minutes, ALL of the solvent-based polishes began to bubble and eventually left big holes in the plate. From that day on, I decided that any flammable substance that could eat through foam was unacceptable for my children’s fingernails, which would inevitably end up in their mouths.
My quest was on, and Piggy Paint™ was born. As you may have guessed, our polish is NOT flammable and sits beautifully on the unaffected foam. We hope you enjoy this water-based polish that is specially formulated of natural ingredients. Finally, a kid-friendly polish without the accompanying drawbacks of traditional polishes. It is free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, biphenyl A, ethyl acetate and acetone... and made in the USA!
