“Based on these new standards, a typical refrigerator in 2014 will use about one-fifth as much electricity as one from the mid-1970s, despite the being about 20% larger in size. The DOE also estimates CO2 emissions will be cut by 344 million metric tons over 30 years, an amount equal to the annual emissions of about 67 million cars, and when in effect for 30 years, an energy savings of 4.84 quads of energy, or roughly enough to meet the total needs of one-fifth of all U.S. households for a year. Over the same 30-year period, and taking into account up-front costs, consumers will also save up to $36 billion. Smog-forming nitrous oxide emissions and toxic mercury emissions would also be dramatically reduced.” http://www.emagazine.com/daily-news/fridges-get-an-energy-upgrade/
Most Americans, including children, have dozens of pesticides and other toxic compounds in their bodies, many of them linked to health threats. A source of many of these toxins? Common, every day, run of the mill consumer products. There's no polite way of saying this: Your body is a landfill for a mind-boggling array of toxic chemicals. So is mine. So is your child's. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sloan-barnett/body-burden_b_995154.html
It always makes me happy to see old discarded books assume second lives, so of course it was love at first sight with Jim Rosenau’s contemporary fine art furniture, particularly the thematic bookcases and shelves created from vintage books.   http://curledupwithabook.com/?p=878
From Santa Cruz County, Calif., to the state of Michigan, lawmakers across the country continue to debate the issue of
plastic bag pollution, with many banning plastic single-use shopping bags or considering such legislation.http://earth911.com/news/2011/09/20/more-cities-explore-plastic-bag-bans/
Think twice before sealing your driveaway.  Research shows that the coal tar used in most driveway sealants is a source of pollution to streams, lakes and (most likely) your own home. http://www.thedailygreen.com/going-green/tips/driveway-sealants-pah-pollution-0911?src=nl&mag=tdg&list=nl_dgr_got_non_092011_driveway-sealants&kw=is
Before the final curtain is drawn on our lives, we can make environmentally friendly choices as to how our funeral and burial is conducted.  http://www.greenlivingtips.com/articles/107/1/Green-funerals-and-burials.html
I love the mason jar wall planter and it looks pretty easy to make! "mason jar wall planter is simple, sturdy, and perfect for housing vine plants that usually like to hang, and also doubles as an easy way to use up some of those extra canning supplies. The double row of planters definitely brings some life to an open wall, and I think that they'd be perfect for starting seedlings indoors come spring." http://green.yahoo.com/blog/care2/524/fabulous-diy-fall-projects-for-the-home.html;_ylt=Aj8bSwgURBFu2v8qOCH6CI2AV8cX
A place to buy more organic items at a fraction of the cost. I signed up for Organic Deals & Coupons daily newsletter. It contains any sales they found or others sent in. I have been able to take advantage of a few! http://www.organicdeals.com/
Throughout October a daily green challenge will be outlined on PGC’s website and in an email delivered to each participant who has signed up. Each challenge will be supported with resources, tips, facts and a green glossary.  http://www.projectgreenchallenge.com/challenges.php
Apples are now the most toxic fruit-The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just dethroned strawberries from the top position of its infamous “Dirty Dozen” list. This means that conventionally-grown apples contain the highest load of pesticides, as compared to any other fruit or vegetable. Here are some disturbing apple facts you should keep in mind when shopping…http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/the-most-toxic-fruit-in-america-2576107
The concept that plastic cutting boards are a more hygienic choice appears to be somewhat misguided. This may be the case where a board is new, but over a period of time the countless score marks become havens for bacteria that cannot be easily removed through normal washing.http://www.greenlivingtips.com/articles/210/1/Cutting-boards.html
“Narrated by Academy Award-winner Jeremy Irons, this "mockumentary" video, hammers home the stark reality of California's plastic bag pollution situation.”  Someone commented that it kind of made them feel sorry for the plastic bag. Hmm. Did it you?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLgh9h2ePYw&feature=youtu.be
In a country that labels everything from cosmetics to cleaning agents, it’s surprising that there are no laws in the U.S. requiring labeling of genetically engineered foods. http://justlabelit.org/
The Environmental Media Association (EMA) is launching a national campaign to recycle cell phones. Old phones cannot be thrown away as they have parts that are considered toxic, so many of them end up gathering dust. Now it is easy to recycle your phones and help protect the environment. http://www.electronicrecyclers.com/recyclingprogram.aspx
“You can tell yourself anything is too difficult, or you can just do it. And you do not need to reconstruct your worldview or take issue with others. You just need to be hungry. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/09/opinion/sunday/i-went-back-to-the-land-to-feed-my-family.html?_r=4
Whether too big; too small; dingy; over-bleached; or out-of-fashion, we all have t-shirts in our dressers that are unwearable. That doesn't mean they should be thrown away. So what are the Eco-conscious, earth-friendly t-shirt wearers supposed to do with their old garments? Here are some suggestions.  http://www.chasinggreen.org/article/10-creative-ways-re-use-or-re-purpose-t-shirts/
When you're out and about there are steps that you can take to protect yourself from toxic exposures. Some of them are good for the environment, too!  http://www.breastcancerfund.org/reduce-your-risk/tips/protect-yourself-environment/
Paint a set of tin cans and put them on your shelf for an attractive display.
