Wilson, a very special poodle, was adopted by award-winning artist Susan Castriota, and is the star of the Wilson’s Wondrous Tails series. Both books are creatively written and illustrated by Susan, and based on their true story.
The first book in the Wilson’s Wondrous Tails series is “Wilson Gets Adopted” is told through the eyes of Wilson who was found by Susan through petfinder.com. Adoption of humans or animals, us as the adopters play a life saving role that should last a lifetime.
This book was our favorite because seven years ago we also rescued/adopted our dog from our local animal control.
It explains how Wilson use to live with a man who smoked and consequently Wilson became ill. When he was adopted by Susan, he had to visit the vet in order to become a healthy dog. Susan explains how animals depend on us for everything they need to be cared for; shelter, water, food, exercise, veterinarian care and of course love. Children will be able to learn how a healthy environment is not only essential for them but also for their pets.
My favorite excerpt from the story was where Wilson said “I still think about all those unfortunate dogs and cats in the shelters who long for a new home. It means so much to them to have volunteers give them attention and take them for walks. They’re all waiting for someone with love in their hearts to take them home. They have so much to offer if given the chance. I have so much to be thankful for”.
It just about made me cry (I did tear up) and made me want to be a better parent by teaching my daughter at a younger age to help others and to volunteer when she’s older. For now though, she can learn compassion and more from Wilson and of course, by my example.

In the second of the series, “Wilson Learns Manners”, Wilson and his doggie friends find themselves in a variety of situations where they have to use good manners to get what they want and show their appreciation to each other. “Manners are a subject that is easily glossed over and forgotten in our fast-paced society today,” said Castriota. “However, the reality is having good manners and being a grateful and conscientious person is never a bad thing and can really help you be successful in life. In my new book, Wilson helps children learn the proper way to behave by interacting with his doggie friends in a variety of situations that can serve as an example to children on how to act in their lives.”
This book is an excellent parent/child book which will more than likely promote a discussion about the importance of using manners, which I consider a big bonus! For example-"Thank you" are great words. They tell someone that you are happy when they do something for you."
Both of these books are about a fourth grade reading level book, but like my toddler does, children of all ages can enjoy the meaning and Castriota’s illustrations with help from a loving adult.
